"When we hit our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change." -Aang
All Four Elements in One Person
Aang, Twinkle Toes, The Last Airbender, The Avatar. These are a few of his names. Due to the hundred year war he is the last living airbender in existence. Aang was raised with the monks in the southern air temple. His father figure was Monk Gyatso who raised him and taught him the ways of the airbenders.
Aang learned that he was the next avatar by choosing toys as a child. The monks presented them with rows of toys and he chose between them. He chose the 4 toys that were related to each nation and that were believed to be owned by the past avatars. The wooden hog monkey originates from the earth kingdom. The clay turtle flute connects with the water tribes. The whirligig uses the air to fly and is connected with the air nomads. The wooden hand drum represents the fire nation as they use the drums in their ceremonies.
Aang Brings the Nations Together
This wasn't the only time in Aang's life that he showed all 4 of the nations in himself. Throughout the show we follow Aang’s journey as he learns the 4 elements and how to stop the 100 year war. We find that Aang is a vegetarian, much to Sokka's surprise, this comes from being raised as an airbender and learning that he wants to respect all life. Aang shows through all the books how he has learned to be as adaptaing as the water tribe. He shows that he will stand his ground and in his beliefs like the people of the earth kingdoms. Like the fire nation Aang learned to use his power for good.
Aang Stayed True to Himself
Staying true to his fun self Aang was able to stay true to his airbending culture while still learning and incorporating the other nations into himself. Aang is the main character of the show and figured out how he connects to each of the nations and help them connect to each other. As is his job as the avatar.
